About the Supply Chain/Planning/Procurement Industry in New Zealand
The development or focus on Supply Chain in New Zealand happened in the mid to late 90s. The focus of early supply chain development was in the manufacturing sector in the areas of production planning, inventory management and warehousing and then rapidly moved on to distribution and the evolution of outsourcing models such as 3PL and 4PL.
The development and implementation of MRP, MRPll, DRP and ERP systems has enabled organisations to focus on an integrated supply chain.
Procurement became a real focus in New Zealand in the mid 2000s and particularly following the Global Financial Crisis from 2008 to 2011 as the requirements for cost reduction were paramount.

Current and Future Trends in Supply Chain, Planning and Procurement
Supply Chain development in New Zealand has more recently centred on improving demand planning functions with an emphasis on S&OP and Integrated Business Planning development.
Supply Chain development has been driven in New Zealand primarily by the manufacturing sector, followed by the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries. The majority of these businesses are small to medium sized.
Outsourcing of Supply Chain activities has grown, reflecting overseas trends. It is estimated that approximately 65% of New Zealand businesses have moved to outsource some of their supply chain activity.
Collaborative Supply Chain practices have become a stronger conversation in the New Zealand marketplace. As most of our companies are small to medium in size and with the increasing difficulty in finding skilled supply chain employees there is a growing recognition that organisations need to look at the opportunities for efficiency in supply chain through collaborating within and across industry sectors.
