About the IT Industry in New Zealand

IT and Communications is the fastest growing sector in New Zealand, consistently earning IT professionals double the income of the national average. New Zealand’s reputation for innovation and our growing international profile has attracted steady overseas investment, while the New Zealand ICT sector’s investment into research and development is by far the highest of all sectors.

The number of IT firms and employees has also shown significant annual growth country-wide. The highest concentration of IT firms and jobs is in Wellington, where Computer Systems Design makes up 3.5% of all Wellington firms, and 5.7% of Wellington’s employment. Auckland and Canterbury also have high numbers of firms and employment in this area.

Alongside technological advancements, we have seen small and large companies alike transition to digital platforms.

Almost everything can be done online now, from banking to booking a haircut. The economy is becoming increasingly digital, so even companies that are not in the IT industry require skilled professionals to keep their technology functioning and up to date, and to keep their customers happy. The demand for digital skills is high across the whole economy.

Demand for Skills in the IT Sector

As the economy continues to be digitised, job vacancies in computer system designs have become harder to fill than those in any other sector. In the latest MBIE report on the sector, employers cited that applicants with professional, technical, and computer skills were the hardest to recruit.

Demand for IT Services Professionals

  • ICT Sales Professionals

  • ICT Managers

  • Computer Network Professionals

  • ITC Support and Test Engineers

  • Database and Systems Administrators and ICT Security Specialists

  • ICT Business and Systems Analysts

  • Electronic Engineers

  • Multimedia Specialists and Web Developers

  • Web Designers

  • ICT Support Technicians

  • ICT Trainers

  • Software and Applications Programmers

New Zealand Visas for IT Professionals

Because of the difficulty in filling IT related job vacancies, we have also seen an increase in visa approval for individuals who have skills in these areas. In 2015/16, work visas approved for software programmers, technicians, multimedia specialists, and web developers made up 62% of the total approved for IT occupations.

Senior Backend Automation Engineer (Digital Transformation)
Location: Auckland / Hybrid
Type: 6-Month Contract
The Opportunity: Are you a specialist in backend quality engineering? We are looking for a heavy-hitting Backend Automation Test Engineer to join one of New Zealand’s most recognizable digital brands during a massive, multi-stream digital transformation.
This isn't a "business as usual" role. You will be at the center of a complex ecosystem, driving integration testing for high-traffic services that reach hundreds of thousands of users daily.
Core Responsibilities
Integration Leadership: Drive the integration testing strategy across multiple workstreams to ensure seamless communication between microservices.
API Automation: Architect and execute sophisticated test suites primarily using Postman to validate complex backend logic.
Cloud Infrastructure: Work deeply within AWS environments to monitor logs, validate data persistence, and ensure cloud-native stability.
Collaboration: Partner with developers and architects to identify integration risks early in the SDLC within an Agile/DevOps culture.
Required Skills & Experience
Postman Power-User: Advanced experience in Postman (including scripting, collection runners, and environment management) is non-negotiable.
AWS Proficiency: Hands-on experience testing within AWS environments (Lambda, S3, API Gateway, etc.).
Integration Specialist: Proven track record of testing complex, multi-stream digital transformations where "everything is moving at once."
Automation Mindset: Ability to build reusable, scalable automation assets rather than just performing manual checks.
Backend Mastery: A deep understanding of microservices architecture, contract testing, and asynchronous messaging.
Why This Role?
Scale: Work on a platform with massive scale and high visibility.
Complexity: Solve genuine engineering challenges involving high-concurrency and real-time data.
Impact: Be a key player in a transformation that is reshaping how New Zealanders consume digital content.
How to Apply
