About the IT Industry in New Zealand

IT and Communications is the fastest growing sector in New Zealand, consistently earning IT professionals double the income of the national average. New Zealand’s reputation for innovation and our growing international profile has attracted steady overseas investment, while the New Zealand ICT sector’s investment into research and development is by far the highest of all sectors.

The number of IT firms and employees has also shown significant annual growth country-wide. The highest concentration of IT firms and jobs is in Wellington, where Computer Systems Design makes up 3.5% of all Wellington firms, and 5.7% of Wellington’s employment. Auckland and Canterbury also have high numbers of firms and employment in this area.

Alongside technological advancements, we have seen small and large companies alike transition to digital platforms.

Almost everything can be done online now, from banking to booking a haircut. The economy is becoming increasingly digital, so even companies that are not in the IT industry require skilled professionals to keep their technology functioning and up to date, and to keep their customers happy. The demand for digital skills is high across the whole economy.

Demand for Skills in the IT Sector

As the economy continues to be digitised, job vacancies in computer system designs have become harder to fill than those in any other sector. In the latest MBIE report on the sector, employers cited that applicants with professional, technical, and computer skills were the hardest to recruit.

Demand for IT Services Professionals

  • ICT Sales Professionals

  • ICT Managers

  • Computer Network Professionals

  • ITC Support and Test Engineers

  • Database and Systems Administrators and ICT Security Specialists

  • ICT Business and Systems Analysts

  • Electronic Engineers

  • Multimedia Specialists and Web Developers

  • Web Designers

  • ICT Support Technicians

  • ICT Trainers

  • Software and Applications Programmers

New Zealand Visas for IT Professionals

Because of the difficulty in filling IT related job vacancies, we have also seen an increase in visa approval for individuals who have skills in these areas. In 2015/16, work visas approved for software programmers, technicians, multimedia specialists, and web developers made up 62% of the total approved for IT occupations.

business analyst.

City:

Wellington

Job Type:

We are currently partnering with a well-regarded Industry Training Provider based here in Wellington to find a pragmatic, people-focused Business Analyst for three month temporary assignment. Our client is looking for someone who enjoys getting "under the hood" of daily operations to understand how work is actually done and where things can be smoothed out for the team.
This isn't your typical desk-bound technical BA role. Instead, you will be spending your time collaborating with operational staff to map out current-state processes and identify where systems could be working harder for them. A significant portion of this project focuses on database management and data quality, so we are looking for someone who is comfortable cleaning up data sets, setting standards for governance, and ensuring the CRM remains a reliable source of truth.
The ideal candidate is a confident communicator who can bridge the gap between technical requirements and human workflows. You’ll be responsible for providing fit-for-purpose recommendations that aren't just theoretically sound but are actually practical for the people using them. Whether you are a career contractor or an experienced BA available for a temp stint, this is a great opportunity to make a tangible impact on a service-based organisation.
Key Requirements
Proven Experience: Solid background in Business Analysis or Business Process Improvement.
Data Savvy: Strong experience in database management, including data cleansing and governance.
System Fluency: Practical experience working with IT systems or CRM platforms in an operational setting.
Documentation Skills: Ability to produce clear, easy-to-read process maps and requirements.
Communication: A collaborative approach with the ability to engage respectfully with stakeholders at all levels.
Bonus Points: Experience in the education or training sector, or exposure to IT service management (ITSM) principles.
If this sounds like the right fit for your skills and you are immediately available to start a new assignment in Wellington, please apply!
At Randstad, we are passionate about providing equal employment opportunities and embracing diversity to the benefit of all. We actively encourage applications from any background.
