About the IT Industry in New Zealand
IT and Communications is the fastest growing sector in New Zealand, consistently earning IT professionals double the income of the national average. New Zealand’s reputation for innovation and our growing international profile has attracted steady overseas investment, while the New Zealand ICT sector’s investment into research and development is by far the highest of all sectors.
The number of IT firms and employees has also shown significant annual growth country-wide. The highest concentration of IT firms and jobs is in Wellington, where Computer Systems Design makes up 3.5% of all Wellington firms, and 5.7% of Wellington’s employment. Auckland and Canterbury also have high numbers of firms and employment in this area.
Alongside technological advancements, we have seen small and large companies alike transition to digital platforms.
Almost everything can be done online now, from banking to booking a haircut. The economy is becoming increasingly digital, so even companies that are not in the IT industry require skilled professionals to keep their technology functioning and up to date, and to keep their customers happy. As the economy continues to be digitised, job vacancies in computer system designs have become harder to fill than those in any other sector. In the latest MBIE report on the sector, employers cited that applicants with professional, technical, and computer skills were the hardest to recruit.

Position: Data Governance Lead
Core Focus: Driving the advancement of data governance, quality, privacy, and risk management capabilities across operational and analytical data assets. Playing a key role in uplifting data quality in an enterprise environment.
Key Responsibilities
Data Governance & Strategy: Lead the development and execution of strategies, policies, and best practices for managing NZ data assets across their lifecycle.
Quality & Ownership: Act as a subject matter expert for data quality, establishing frameworks for data ownership/stewardship and embedding quality principles with Data Engineering teams.
Privacy & Risk: Lead the management of PII data (classification, access rights) and drive the adoption of capabilities like Privacy by Design and PIA methodologies in partnership with the Privacy & Customer Trust COE.
Enablement: Oversee the successful implementation and adoption of data governance tools and manage the development of data documentation.
Group Partnership: Represent the New Zealand team for data quality and governance in Group Data Quality, Privacy, Risk, and Management forums.
Skills & Experience
Data Governance: Solid and practical experience (5 - 10 years) dedicated to data governance methodologies and principles.
Tooling: Proven, hands-on experience with data management tools like Collibra and Ataccama is beneficial. Familiarity with JIRA and Confluence is also beneficial.
Transformation & Agile: Experience with transformation/change management and a strong understanding of Agile delivery principles.
Leadership: Demonstrated experience in leading teams, fostering a culture of development, and providing coaching/mentorship.
Certification: IAPP, DAMA, or other related studies in privacy/governance are preferred.
