The Privacy Commissioner is New Zealand’s privacy regulator. The organisation works across business, government and the public to promote and protect individual privacy. Key functions include advocating and advising on matters relating to privacy, educating businesses and organisations about their privacy obligations and individuals about their privacy rights, and investigating and conciliating complaints about breaches of individual privacy.

2020 is a big year for the organisation. The new and modernised Privacy Act 2020, effective 1 December, expands the organisation’s role as a regulator and gives it a greater range of enforcement powers.

The organisation is looking for a talented Senior Communications Adviser with expertise in strategic engagement. Reporting to the Public Affairs Manager, you will develop and implement a programme of strategic engagement initiatives with a wide variety of key stakeholders and community groups across New Zealand. You will ensure that the engagement reflects New Zealand’s multicultural society and varying privacy concerns across different communities. You will develop strong working partnerships with industry bodies and interest groups to maximise the organisation’s reach through leveraging key relationships, and provide support for the organisation’s other communications and education activities.

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have

5+ years strategic engagement or communications experience

Experience in building and managing key stakeholder relationships across sectors, industries and communities

Experience with designing and implementing strategic engagement initiatives

Familiarity with effective use of social media and other communications channels

Experience in privacy is not essential but a strong interest in privacy issues is

Experience in a regulatory environment is an advantageThis role will suit a highly organised self-starter with excellent stakeholder management, relationship building, inter-personal, and communication skills (both oral and written). You must be able to work effectively with diverse communities and be proactive and highly responsive in a rapidly evolving external environment.
