The Privacy Commissioner is New Zealand’s privacy regulator. The organisation works across business, government and the public to promote and protect individual privacy. Key functions include advocating and advising on matters relating to privacy, educating businesses and organisations about their privacy obligations and individuals about their privacy rights, and investigating and conciliating complaints about breaches of individual privacy.

2020 is a big year for the organisation. The new and modernised Privacy Act 2020, effective 1 December, expands the organisation’s role as a regulator and gives it a greater range of enforcement powers.
